Henry County's future depends on transportation accessibility. Our residential growth has far outpaced our long term transportation needs. Subsequently, our county is in a critical situation with the promise that if a plan is not adopted and implemented immediately, our long term sustainability will be lost. As a county, we are almost completely dependent on Interstate 75. Far too long we have utilized I-75 as a local road, entering and exiting as if the road was built solely for our needs. Every Henry resident has had to contend with the scenario that when an accident occurs on I-75, every major/minor arterial and collector roads will be above vehicle capacity and simply become an extensive parking lot. With one out of every three working residents driving outside of the county for employment and with little alternative to a north/south - east/west route, we are at critical mass. It is time that we construct a north/south corridor on the west side of I-75 by realigning a series of roads to create this very important arterial road.
Among the general needs are road widening projects, road extension projects, signalization, and transit. Within our transportation needs there exists approximately thirty-one transportation improvements that are critical to the movement of traffic for today's population. The BOC has identified some of these projects in SPLOST III, however the county still has incomplete road projects from the SPLOST I and II. We are at a critical stage in our county.
Throughout this campaign, Mike will be discussing his plan for alleviating our transportation gridlock. As a "big picture" thinker, Mike will ensure that the needs of the entire county are addressed in order of priority for current and future transportation needs. Our quality of life depends on transportation.
